Biography
Jeff greatly admires artists who embrace the rollercoaster ride of “making it” in the industry. While he once harbored similar aspirations himself, Jeff chose a more conventional path in the law, but his reverence for those who bravely traverse the uncertain terrain of the arts remains unwavering. Jeff founded the firm’s Entertainment and Media Law Practice Group in 2012, and now champions artists in the legal arena, ensuring they receive the recognition and support they deserve, even if his own artistic ventures are limited to doodles and sticky notes.
With a passion for creativity and a knack for connecting with people, Jeff offers more than just legal counsel to his clients – he's a trusted advisor and a proud advocate for their dreams, guiding them through the highs and lows of their careers. Whether it's hammering out recording agreements for Grammy Award-winning musicians, managing publicity rights for renowned athletes, or resolving complex ownership disputes between artistic collaborators, Jeff approaches each challenge with a personal touch, ensuring that his clients feel heard and supported every step of the way. Jeff has a talent for translating legal jargon into laymen’s terms, translating complex concepts into straightforward insights tailored for artists to navigate the legal landscape of their business with clarity and confidence.
Jeff is also a seasoned litigator and member of the firm's Intellectual Property and Commercial Litigation Practice Groups. Drawing from his wealth of experience, Jeff has helped clients resolve contractual and business disputes, wielding his expertise in copyright and trademark claims, trade secret battles and defamation lawsuits. But Jeff isn't just about winning cases; he strives to deliver results that matter. With a focus on efficiency and effectiveness, Jeff collaborates closely with his clients, ensuring that their litigation journey is not only successful but also cost-conscious.
Through countless courtroom experiences and strategic negotiations, Jeff has gained invaluable insights into the nuances of intellectual property law and the intricacies of contractual terms. By leveraging his background in litigation, Jeff brings to the table a deep understanding of the potential pitfalls and challenges his clients may face, which uniquely positions him as a proactive transactional lawyer for his entertainment clients. He is able to anticipate and preemptively address issues in drafting and negotiating agreements and protecting his client’s creative assets, ultimately providing them with comprehensive and proactive legal representation tailored to their specific needs.
But Jeff's skills extend beyond courtroom and boardroom drama. His commitment to education shines through as an adjunct professor at DePaul University College of Law. He is a long-time board member of the Recording Academy’s Midwest Chapter, serving as Chairperson of its Advocacy Committee, which has allowed him to introduce and advocate for legislation that further protects his clients’ intellectual property.
Jeff also places great emphasis on family and philanthropy, recognizing their integral role in both his personal life and career. As a dedicated advocate for giving back to the community, Jeff’s commitment extends to organizations like Lawyers for the Creative Arts, where he volunteers his time, providing invaluable legal support to artists in need. His philanthropic endeavors go beyond traditional avenues, as evidenced by his creation of "Sound of Summer," an annual musical event with a charitable purpose. This initiative not only showcases Jeff’s passion for music but also underscores his belief in using his talents to uplift others and foster positive change in the world.
With Jeff, it's more than just business – it's about building lasting relationships and championing the creative spirit that drives his clients forward.
