Jeffrey S. Becker Behind Groundbreaking AI Legislation in Illinois
Swanson, Martin & Bell, LLP attorney and Illinois Wesleyan University alum Jeffrey S. Becker was recently featured in the Illinois Wesleyan University Magazine (Spring 2025 Volume 34) for his pivotal achievement in shaping Illinois’ new AI regulations. This new law, the AI Digital Replica Protections Law (HB4875), protects artists from the unauthorized use of their voice, image, or likeness in AI-generated content.
In collaboration with Matt Glavin of Cozen O'Connor Public Strategies, Rep. Jen Gong-Gershowitz, and the Recording Academy, Jeff played a key role in drafting and guiding the bill through both chambers of the Illinois General Assembly. The bill passed unanimously in the House and Senate and was signed into law by Governor J.B. Pritzker on August 9, 2024. This law has become a benchmark for other jurisdictions considering similar protections for artists and content creators. Read the full Illinois Wesleyan Magazine article here.
