Greubel and Slovis Secure a Not Guilty Verdict in Medical Negligence Case
Swanson, Martin & Bell, LLP attorneys William P. Greubel, III and Ryan M. Slovis secured a defense verdict at trial on behalf of their clients, a general surgeon, and a Chicago-area multispecialty physician group, in the Circuit Court of Cook County, Illinois. The case concerned a 56-year-old male who sustained total bilateral vision loss following an incision and debridement surgery on an abscess. Plaintiff alleged that the defendant surgeon did not properly optimize the plaintiff prior to surgery and thereby caused a dangerous and sustained drop in the plaintiff’s blood pressure during and immediately after the surgery. This sustained loss of adequate blood pressure caused an irreversible injury to the plaintiff’s bilateral retinal arteries.
During the trial, the defense contended that the plaintiff’s surgery was done on an emergent basis to treat and prevent worsening sepsis and septic shock.
The plaintiff had a life care plan in excess of $7 million and asked the jury for a total award of more than $33,000,000. Following a two-week trial, the jury returned a verdict for the defense. The case was tried before the Honorable Judge Karen O’Malley.
