Greubel and Slovis Obtain A Not Guilty Verdict in High-Stakes Medical Negligence Case
Swanson, Martin & Bell, LLP attorneys William P. Greubel, III and Ryan M. Slovis secured a defense verdict at trial on behalf of their clients, a critical care physician and a multispecialty physician’s group, in the Circuit Court of Cook County, Illinois.
Plaintiff alleged that two physicians, including our clients, failed to administer thrombolytics for the treatment of a massive pulmonary embolism in a 54-year-old patient with a history of a clotting disorder and end-stage renal disease. Plaintiff alleged that the providers' negligence resulted in the patient's death within 20 hours of admission. The defense contended that the decision to treat with Heparin instead of tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) was reasonable under the circumstances.
The Plaintiff asked the jury for $9 million. Following a 2-week trial, the jury returned a verdict for the defense. The case was tried before Judge Scott D. McKenna.
