McGovern Represents School District in Flood Damage Lawsuit

Swanson, Martin & Bell, LLP’s Timothy S. McGovern is representing a Northern Illinois school district in its lawsuit against a Tennessee barge company for $6.4 million in flood damages. Marseilles Elementary District 150 officials contend that that an elementary school sustained significant damage in April when seven barges broke loose from a towing vessel on the lllinois River. The barges hit a lock and dam, which sent “unprecedented floodwaters into the city,” according to Superintendent JoEllen Fuller in an Associated Press article. The flood damage forced the school to close for the rest of the school year and also damaged 200 Marseilles homes.

McGovern, who chairs the firm’s Admiralty, Maritime and Transportation Practice Group, is an adjunct professor of Admiralty Law at The John Marshall Law School in Chicago.
