Wehrman, Former Olympic Trials Marathon Competitor, Elected CARA President
Christopher D. Wehrman, an attorney at Swanson, Martin & Bell, LLP, has been named President of the 2012 Board of Directors of the Chicago Area Runners Association (CARA).
A non-profit organization, CARA is devoted to motivating and supporting the Chicagoland running community through training programs, educational seminars and opportunities to interact with fellow runners. With nearly 9,000 members, CARA is the largest running organization in the Midwest and the third largest in the nation.
Wehrman, who practices Family Law, previously served as President-Elect and has been on the CARA Board of Directors since 2007. Duties during his two-year term as President include managing the Board of Directors’ overnight of CARA’s executive director and staff to ensure financial stability, promoting continued growth of membership and programs, and advocating for members.
“CARA promotes a supportive and safe running environment that encourages runners to perform at the best of their ability, while they enjoy the camaraderie of this healthy activity,” says Wehrman. “Through our charity program, CARA also promotes healthy living and goal-setting to at-risk high school students.”
Wehrman’s involvement in the running community dates back many years. He was an All-Big Ten Conference runner in cross country and track at Michigan State University, where he received undergraduate, graduate and law degrees. Now retired from professional competition, he qualified for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in the marathon for the 2004 and 2008 Olympics. He also has a marathon personal record of 2:17:50 and has been named CARA Runner of the Year three times.
“I am excited to see Chris take the helm of CARA’s Board of Directors,” said Wendy Jaehn, CARA’s Executive Director. “Chris shares my passion for running and big-picture vision for CARA and together we will take CARA’s advocacy, training, and racing to a new level.”
Fellow runners at Swanson, Martin & Bell, LLP, including Managing Partner and frequent marathon runner Timothy G. Nickels, have encouraged Wehrman’s involvement in CARA.
“From hosting board meetings at our office to encouraging employee participation in CARA events, I am very grateful for SMB’s support of CARA and my role with the organization,” said Wehrman.
