Bill Patterson routinely handles complex commercial litigation and class actions with an emphasis on intellectual property issues. Bill has extensive experience in disputes in both Federal and state courts involving patents, trade secrets, trademarks, unfair trade practices, contracts, right of publicity, and copyrights. Bill routinely represents companies ranging in size from small, closely-held corporations to multinational, publically traded companies. Bill’s practice involves a variety of industries including finance, entertainment and chemical companies.
Bill also regularly advises companies on regulatory issues regarding data privacy and security, including compliance with Gramm-Leach Bliley and HIPAA. Bill also routinely advises his clients on a variety of licensing matters, including the licensing or sale of intellectual property and goods.
Bill is very comfortable with high-stakes, “bet-the-company” litigation. As an example, he served as general counsel to the closely held financial technology company, Business Logic Corporation, for the entirety of its trade secrets litigation with Morningstar, Inc. As a result of the lawsuit, Business Logic received a $61 million settlement. While at Business Logic, Bill passed the Series 65 exam. Prior to serving as general counsel of Business Logic, Bill worked at one of the most respected firms in the country on a variety of complex financial litigation matters.
Bill takes great pride in serving as a member of the Chicago Lights Board of Directors, an organization that takes a multi-faceted approach to combating the effects of urban poverty.
