Helms Receives Jury Verdict Reporter Trial Lawyer Excellence Award For Career Achievement

Retired Swanson, Martin & Bell, LLP Partner J. Lawrence Helms received a Trial Lawyer Excellence Award for Career Achievement for a Defense Attorney last month at the Annual Jury Verdict Reporter Awards.

Judges and trial attorneys from across Chicagoland attended the invitation-only ceremony and reception at the InterContinental Chicago, along with many of Helms’ colleagues from Swanson, Martin & Bell, LLP. A Career Achievement Award recognizes outstanding attorneys who have achieved significantly favorable results in jury trials over the span of their career. Fellow defense attorneys Brian T. Henry, Equity Partner at Pretzel & Stouffer and Catherine C. Reiter, Partner at HeplerBroom LLC, were honored with the same award this year.

“Larry is very deserving of this award, given his accomplished career as a trial lawyer,” said Swanson, Martin & Bell, LLP Managing Partner Timothy G. Nickels. “We were pleased to see him recognized at this event.”

Helms received his B.A. in 1974 from the College of William and Mary and his J.D. in 1978 from the University of Virginia. He began as a felony prosecutor for two years in Lake County, Illinois and tried civil cases in state and federal court in Cook County, Illinois for the balance of his career.  During his more than 30 years as an attorney, he focused his practice on Medical Negligence and Product Liability. Helms retired from Swanson, Martin & Bell, LLP as a Partner in 2011.
