Ferrill and Slovis Obtain Defense Verdict In High-Stakes Medical Malpractice Case

Swanson, Martin & Bell, LLP attorneys Sarah A. Ferrill and Ryan M. Slovis secured a defense verdict on behalf of their client, a cardiologist, in the Circuit Court of Cook County, Illinois.

This case involved the death of an 81-year-old who underwent a peripheral angioplasty with a "high stick" and later experienced a significant retroperitoneal bleed after the sheath was removed. The patient was moved to the ICU, where she received medical management for several hours until a vascular surgeon arrived to repair the vessel. The patient had passed away by that time.

The plaintiff alleged that three physicians, including the firm's client, the cardiologist, were negligent in failing to order the vascular surgery consult in a timely manner.

Plaintiff asked the jury for $15 million. The jury returned a verdict of not guilty for the defense. The case was tried before Judge Jean M. Golden.
